Two assumptions can be made about students who major in English as a foreign language. Firstly, they will have numerous contacts with members of diverse cultures. Secondly, they would benefit if provided with helpful guidelines for success in a fast-changing world characterized by intercultural contact. These two assumptions reflect the goal of the course. However, given the constraints allocated by the curriculum, the setting of intercultural contact is limited to two cultures: American and British. As such, in this course, students will first be provided with general background information about how culture influences human behavior in such areas as identity, communication patterns, choice, and relationships. Given that background knowledge, students will explore such cultural and social aspects of the United States and of Great Britain as people, education, economy, environment, media, and cultural life.
